This tutorial explains how to receive email alert for the new release of a GitHub repository. I have used a free service, called “Releaser“, for this. Using this service, you can first find and select your preferred GitHub repositories or projects that you want to track, and then this service automatically monitors those repositories. The monitoring process is repeated automatically every 30 minutes. When it finds that a new release is added to a particular repository, it sends you the email.
In the screenshot below, you can see an email alert for the new release of a GitHub repository sent by this service. Although the service is quite useful, but few things are missing here. You can’t set the monitoring frequency (it is fixed to 30 minutes by default). Also, it sends email alert for the latest release only. So, if a repository is updated with two or three releases in 30 minutes interval, then it will send email alert for the latest release only.
How To Receive Email Alert When A GitHub Repository Has a New Release?
Use this link to open the homepage of this service. The first thing you need to do is sign in to your GitHub account and give permission to this service. If you haven’t created any account, you need to sign up. The service uses the same email address for email alerts which is registered with your GitHub account.
When you have done that, you can use Add button to search for the repository for which you want to receive the email alerts. A pop-up is opened on the right side using which you can find the repository and add it to the Watchlist.
All, the repositories are visible in the Watchlist and you can also remove any repository anytime.
That’s it! Now you can close the tab. The service will monitor the added repositories and send the email alert on your email address.

The Verdict:
This is a good service for those who are closely following a particular GitHub repository and want to be notified when the repository gets a new release. It is not a good idea to keep opening the GitHub page in a tab and check manually if a repository has a new release or not. Therefore, this service is handy. Just add repositories to the watchlist and you will receive email alerts.
