This is a quick tutorial to explain how to enable live captions for feed videos on Instagram. The new auto-captions feature is being rolled out to all Instagram users today, and it can be now be found on the latest Instagram Android and iOS apps. For now, automatic captions support 17 languages and more will be supported in the coming days.
Right now, the captions are disabled by default for users except for the creators. You have to manually enable captions for videos and in this post, I will walk you through the step-by-step guide to do it. The steps are the same for Android as well as iOS, but for this post, I will be showing the process on iPhone.
Automatic captions were there on IGTV but when Instagram decided to abandon it, captions went along with it. But now, captions can be turned on for feed videos, as they will help users with hearing disabilities understand the context of a lot of videos.
How to Enable Live Captions for Videos on Instagram?
Update the Instagram app to the latest version in order to enable live captions. After you have updated the app on Android or iOS, just follow the steps below to enable captions.
- Find a video that has some spoken words in it. Next, you tap on the 3 dots icon at the top right side to find the newly added option called “Manage captions”.
- Tap on the option and then simple slide the switch in front of the “Captions” option to enable them. There is a “Language” option as well, but for now I think it is automatically set to English.
- After you have enabled the captions, just play the video again and you will start seeing them now. You can see them in the screenshot below. The captions are mostly accurate as well as sync with the video perfectly.
- When you no longer need these video captions, then you can disable them. Just follow these steps in reverse order to turn them off.
In this way, you can now enable automatic video captions on Instagram. The process is simple as well as straightforward. The screenshots I have added above are taken on iPhone, but the process is same for Android as too. Also, the option to turn on captions can be found on videos in the profile of the user and is not just limited to IG feed.
Final thoughts:
Automatic video captions can now be turned on easily on latest Instagram app on Android as well iOS. This new addition of feature to the platform makes it easy to understand what is being spoken in the video even if they are mute. Also, in the coming updates, I hope they roll out the option for multi-language captions soon.
