The Guardian Eyewitness for iPad is a free application that provides information about global happenings and events in the form of beautiful photographs. The application has a great collection of selected photos. It displays the photos in the form of a newspaper and shows caption related to the same. It can also play a slide show of the images. With the ability to choose your favorites and share, this application is a very good way of getting information of the events all around the world along with some beautiful pictures.
Application also offers other brilliant features which are demonstrated in the sections to come.
Features:
The guardian eyewitness has two sections namely, Eyewitness and the Eyewitness Archive. The Eyewitness section displays the happening around the world in the form of selected pictures. On the main screen this section shows the number of stories you haven’t viewed yet. When you tap on this section, you can see two tabs showing All and Favourites. You can favourite the stories you like to view separately later on. Apart from providing the information as a caption the application also provides with the information of the camera used and setting at the time when the the photo was clicked. This information can be accessed by tapping the info button at the bottom of the image.
Instead of swiping through the photos, you can also choose to play a slideshow of all the photos, duration of which can be changed from the settings. There is usual share button from which you can share the stories via Email, Twitter and Facebook.
The Eyewitness archive section contains selection of best images from the archive. This tab contains images divided into various sections. There are many categories like, Eyewitness extra, Olympics and Paralympics, Wildlife, Politics and protest and so on. Each section has a download button on it which can be used to download all the images that are present in that section. You have to download it to view the images in that section. On the contrary, these images can be removed with a single button that appears after you download the images. Application has a special option in which you can disable downloads over 3G. Since application has to be updated regularly to add new photos, this option is pretty handy if you have limited data plans and do not want to spend too much on this application.
Final Verdict:
The application carries a unique concept. It is a news reader type of application but instead of text, it focuses on the photographs. Also, with all the photographers sharing some wonderful stuff for the world to see, I wonder why someone would not want to download it.
