Type While You walk is a free iPhone app that lets you type efficiently while you are walking. The application aims to bring in a new way of typing while you are walking. Now, you can type safely without any risk even while you are on the go. The application achieves this by using your phone’s camera. You are able to see everything in front of you while you are typing over the screen showing what is in front of you.
The interface of the application isn’t that impressive though and also, the advertisements make it worse. But, as the application does something out of the box, some resistance is meant to take place.
How does Type While You Walk App for iPhone works:
First of all, I’d like to say that application does not integrate with your native keyboard. You have to open the application separately to type in your message. Also, the usage involves a few changes in your typing pattern. I personally feel that while we type, we hold our phone in such a position that camera is facing downwards or in other words towards the ground. If you type in a way that the camera faces in the front direction, then this application solves the purpose it is meant for.
Other than this application has taken into consideration many issues that could have come up while using this application. There might be a scenario wherein you are walking at some place where the colour of the text is such that you are unable to see while you type. In that case you have the option of changing the colour of the text to suit your needs.
For the scenarios where you have to use this application at night, there is an option of switching on the flashlight while you walk to throw light on the objects in front of you. There is also a character count maintained as you type so you may decide how much cost will a message incur to you. For some reason there is a button on the the top right corner of the keyboard that takes picture from the camera. That picture is not saved in your photo library and can be accessed by tapping on the thumbnail which is created after you click it. May be, it is to capture any special moment you might encounter while you walk to save it for the time being.
When it comes to actually using this application for texting, this application lacks some basic features. You type in the text you want to send to some one. Hit the share button from the menu appearing after tapping the top right button and you get some options of sharing it via SMS, Mail and Twitter. Alternatively, you can copy the text and paste it anywhere you want to.
Final Verdict:
The application does not integrate the basic messaging services such as Whatsapp, Viber et. al. which is a huge drawback. After all, switching back to the application after each time you read the reply is pretty tedious.
Also, the application doesn’t consider the fact that if we are copying and pasting the text typed in some other application, our attention is still diverted from the road we are walking on, so the purpose isn’t solved after all. You can get rid of the advertisements in the pro version if you want.
If you think this application is something you needed, it can be downloaded for free from here.
