Word Test is a free online vocabulary test to check your English vocabulary. The test has been developed by the Center for Reading Research of Ghent University, Belgium. The test consists of 100 letter sequences which include existing English words as well as make-up non-words. All the words are in American English spelling and you’ve to answer whether you know the word or don’t. There’s also a penalty for identifying wrong words in the test.
At the end, the test result shows the percentage of English words you know along with the complete breakdown of the result. You can then also check the meaning of each of the words which you didn’t know.
Note: According to the test maker, the test works best on Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
Taking the Online Vocabulary Test to Check Your English Vocabulary:
The vocabulary test made by the Ghent University is a short one which hardly takes 4 minutes, but you have to provide a few details about yourself before you can start with it. You have to enter the details like your age, gender, the country where you grew up, native language, knowledge level of English, etc.
After providing the details, you can start taking the test. During the test, you will be shown a word in American English spelling. You’ve to answer whether you know the word or not. You’ve to press key F if you don’t and key J if you do. When you’re ready to start the test, press Spacebar.
While you’re taking the test, there’s a progress bar at the top. You can gauge the progress of the test using it. There’s no time limit for answering, but do remember that you can’t go back to any word once you’ve answered it. As I had also mentioned that the words are a mixture of existing and make-up non-words, so don’t give wrong answers. You will be penalized for answering Yes to make-up non-words which will affect your total score adversely.
Once the test is over, the website will automatically display the results. It will show you the overall % of English words you know along with % of existing words you said Yes to and % of non-words you said Yes to.
Apart from this, there is also the breakdown of all the words into 4 categories which were shown to you during the test. These categories are: Words you didn’t know, Nonwords you responded YES to, Words you knew, and Nonwords you responded NO to.
You can click on any of the categories to see the complete list of words along with their meaning if they are the existing English words. It also shows the time taken by you to answer each of the words.
