This new profile QR code feature is similar to Nametags on Instagram and Snapcode on Snapchat. All these features create and associate a temporary QR code with the profile on the respective platform. Instead of sharing the username or contact numbers, users can send the QR code to allow others to add them. Instead of typing usernames or adding contacts, people can quickly add friends by scanning the QR code.

How to Add Friends Using QR Code on WhatsApp?
This new profile QR code feature is recently added to WhatsApp and available to WhatsApp Beta users at the moment. To get this feature right now, you must have the latest beta version installed. If you are not registered for beta updates, you can fetch the latest beta APK from here. Otherwise, you can wait alongside the iPhone users to get this feature in the public version.
Once you have the latest WhatsApp beta version installed, open the app and click the New Message button from the chat screen. This brings your WhatsApp contact list along with options to create a New Group and add a New Contact. If the New Contact has a QR code icon next to it that means the feature is available to you.
Tap that QR code icon and it brings a QR code interface on your screen. It opens at My Code tab where it shows a QR code for your WhatsApp. From here, you can share your QR code via other apps and save it to the gallery. You can also re-generate a new QR code if you want.
Now, from the top, switch to the Scan Code section. Doing this opens the camera and you can scan a WhatsApp profile QR code. You can scan the QR code from other people’s phones and add them as new contacts. You can also browse the received QR code form the gallery and scan that to add a new contact. Scanning the QR code fetches the respective WhatsApp profile along with the profile picture and contact number. From there, you can add the contact as friends, save the contact, and start a conversation.
