Datawrapper is a free website to create visual charts from data and then share them with anyone. The good thing about the website is that its a completely automated process as you only have to enter the data and website takes care of everything. Datawrapper also lets you edit and modify the data within the website and see the changes in the corresponding visual chart instantly.
You can choose from 10 types of charts ranging from Bar Chart, Column Chart, Pie Chart, Donut Chart to Map. Each of these charts has its own set of characteristics which you can modify and customize as per your choice or brand need. You can access Datawrapper via their website as well as by installing it on your own servers.
Note: The website also claims that its visual chart can also be embedded in websites but during my testing, it didn’t workout for WordPress and Blogger. You can try the embedding feature with your websites to check whether it works for you or not.
Using this Free Website to Create Visual Charts from Data:
Go to Datawrapper website and click on the option Try It Now. It will take you to the editing area of the website. From here you can handle all the things like uploading data, choosing the chart type, customizing it, etc.. The first step is to upload the data. You can upload the data by either copy-paste or by importing the file. Do remember that it supports only CSV data as of now.
After this the next step is to check your data and make changes to it (if you want to make any). You can also add the source for the data and a URL to it but its optional.
Now comes the really important step of Datawrapper. It is the step from where you will see the data being displayed as visual chart. You can customize the graph, choose colors, layouts, etc.. As you can see that the visual graph is on the left side while the editing control is on the right side.
The editing control has 3 parts: Select Chart, Refine the Chart, and Tell the Story.
- Select Chart: Use this option to choose the type of visual chart for your data. You can choose from 10 visual charts. You can also choose the layout type and size for the visual chart.
- Refine the Chart: This option lets you customize the chart by changing colors, fonts, etc.. The availability of the option differs with the type of chart selected by you.
- Tell the Story: Give your chart a name, add a description, and other details using this option.
You can make any changes to your chart or data any number of times. When you have done all the changes, the final step is to preview the visual chart and share it. The website provides you with a unique URL as well as a code for embedding on any website/blog. You can also choose the height and width for the chart before sharing.
