Pictomio is a free photo manager for viewing and categorizing your images and videos. The free media management software allows you to archive digital files according to your preferences, create slideshows or image carousels, manage 3D-accelerated images and upload photos to the web with great ease.
This free media management software is designed to facilitate uploads to a number of popular websites, such as Flickr, Facebook and Photobucket. This means you do not need a separate Facebook photo uploader to upload photos to Facebook.
You will also be able to store and view your photos’ data, such as time/date and the camera settings used when the photo was taken. This feature of Pictomio will be very useful for photography lovers who wish to improve their photo-taking skills and manage 3D-accelerated images.
Once the installation of Pictomio has finished, the free multimedia manager will automatically detect and import your images. You can view them in a variety of different ways, including thumbnail mode, filmstrip view and the carousel mode which will allow you to go through your images faster.
The photos’ data will be displayed along with the image in Pictomio. You can categorize your images and archive digital files depending on date, place or content, so that they can be easily located in the future. There is also a basic editing tools selection in this free multimedia manager that you can use to give your photos a quick fix without having to use a free image editor.
But apart from the usual features of such free media management software, this free multimedia manager offers a unique and exceptional function, geotagging. This option allows you to pinpoint the location where a photo was taken when you upload photos to the web, using Google Maps or Virtual Earth-based maps. The preinstalled PictoGeo add-on for Pictomio (also free!) makes the free media management software GPS compatible, which will enable you to plan your trips and receive valuable information, such as alternative routes and waypoints.
The free media management software supports GPS tracksticks as well, which create a virtual log of the locations you have visited. Finally, you will be able to manually design a 3D display of the route you intend to take using Pictomio.
The user interface of Pictomio is well-designed and elegant, and its use is easy and effective. However, the biggest flaw of Pictomio is that, in order to run the free media management software on your computer, you have to have a ShaderModel 2.0 graphics card installed with a minimum of 128 MB of video RAM, and the PC should have at least 1GB RAM. This excludes many home users.
If you do have the appropriate type of graphics card installed, Pictomio is definitely worth trying! It is available in a multitude of languages, including English, French, Chinese and German. Otherwise, you can stick with Picasa.
Other free media management software includes aTunes and Helium Music Manager.
