Sofervise is a free software to password protect the applications and programs on your computer. If someone tries to execute a program that is password protected, they will be prompted for a password. You can choose which programs you want to password protect. Sofervise is completely free.
I have already written about how to create a secure area on your disk to protect your documents. Sofervise is an interesting security addition by password protecting your applications themselves.
Here are a few uses that I can think of Sofervise:
Some applications charge on pay per use. You can choose to password protect those so that no one else can execute those.
You might have some programs that you might not want your kids to mess with. For example, you might be using JStock to keep track of your Stock Portfolio, and do not want someone else to change settings of that, or even see your Portfolio.
Just for fun.
Apart from password protecting applications, Sofervise also lets you specify HotKey for your favorite programs so that you can quickly launch them by pressing some hot keys. I would, though, prefer to use some interesting app launcher for that, like CircleDock or Launchy.
Sofervise is very easy to use, and completely free. Make sure that you have some good antivirus software on your system, so that some virus does not corrupts your programs.

will it work on windows 7?

@Gus: That is indeed a good use of this utility. I wasn’t aware that stored passwords of Google Chrome can be accessed easily.

The first use that comes to my mind would be password protecting Google Chrome; Chrome does not currently have a built-in master password, allowing anyone to access any of your stored passwords. This would serve as a makeshift master password.

@Ravi: You are absolutely right. That is indeed a good use. Especially because these applications store the password, and if anyone opens them, they can directly access all your emails.

One possible use that immediately comes to mind is password protecting consumer grade email clients like Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird and Opera. Opera used to have this functionality early on, but not any more. Thanks for the tip.
