SBGuard Anti-Ransomware is a free software to protect from all known ransomware. Whether I talk about CryptoLocker, TeslaCrypt, Locky, CryptoWall, Zepto, CryptoXXX, or any other dangerous ransomware, this software can be useful to prevent their attacks.

The way this software works is it locks down many system processes as well as locations. Thus, even if a ransomware tries to install itself on your PC, it won’t get success. Around 700 registry entries are injected for prevention against ransomware attacks. However, this may also create the problem in installing a new software, so you have to first disable SBGuard Anti-Ransomware before you install a new tool or software.

SB Anti-Ransomware- interface

Above is the main interface of this anti-ransomware software. This software can also protect you from many viruses which is a plus point of this software over other similar tools.

To check if this software really works or not, you can have a look at the short video added below:

If you want to try some other useful anti-ransomware, you may check these:

Using This Free SBGuard Anti-Ransomware Software:

Here is the homepage of this software. Like other anti-ransomware, this one also comes with a simple interface. You can submit your name and email address to get the download link. Download the software, install and launch it.

The software has only two buttons which are visible at the right side: Enable Protection and Disable Protection. Both the buttons are self-explanatory. Press the first button and then you have to restart the PC. After that, the software will monitor your PC and try to prevent from ransomware attack.

enable protection

When you have to install a new tool or you face any trouble after enabling this software, then simply use Disable Protection button.

This is all you can do with this software. There are no configuration settings or other complicated options. Just a simple interface and two buttons are there to operate this software. It is good for novice as well as advanced users.

The Verdict:

This anti-ransomware might be better than others. The reason is that apart from preventing ransomware attacks, it can also help to protect your PC from viruses. However, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t install a good antivirus. You should always have a good antivirus software to keep your PC secure. In addition to a strong antivirus, a good anti-ransomware like SBGuard Anti-Ransomware would be a good choice.

Get this software.

Greetings Laxman - I don’t think SBGuard will follow up their original, personal and signed email response to my questions. Perhaps that is not a priority, as their core business provides data-backup services to Australian businesses and SBGuard appears to be a secondary, perhaps auxilliary, interest.
As to asking again, I don’t do “second requests”. 😃

However, shortly after I sent my request, they did post additional information on their website, along with their updated version, SBGuard Anti-Ransomware 1.4.5 , on August 30, 216.

The product appears to be in active development, which includes the promise of more complete documentation and features: " We do however have a work in progress on some more advanced techniques that will require SBGuard to run as a service. Another feature on it’s way is to provide live notifications when SBGuard blocks any execution, including from legitimate softwares. This will help novice users to diagnose any issues quickly."
Personally, I like the direction in which this software is moving (especially the “live notifications”) and find the documentation they already provide to be more complete than other so-called anti-ransomware solutions, including Kaspersky’s, Malwarebytes’ and Bitdefender’s, the last of which is a bad joke – being nothing more than a poorly implemented “sandbox”.
The fact that it builds on what is already built into Windows is a plus: Why reinvent the wheel, right?
For now, however, not having found anything better, I’ll continue to use EMET -plus- Malwarebytes Antimalware for protection from this particular threat.
I’ve been actively researching dedicated anti-ransomware solutions for several weeks and, once again, thank you for bringing SBGuard to our (my) attention. 😃

Hi JMJsquared, your commitment is really appreciable. Perhaps SBGuard team need more time to answer you or they need a reminder.

ADDENDUM: SBGuard still has not provided the information they promised. After waIting more than three weeks, I doubt that they will.

Hello Laxman - Today I received a brief (very brief) reply from SBGuard developers, Sydney Backups, promising answers to several questions I asked last week about their software. As soon as they reply with those answers, I’ll be sure to share them with you here. --JMJ

HI JMJsquared! Thanks for your concern. SBGuard is really soft on system usage. Users with good configured PCs merely find any trouble related to the system performance after activating it.
And, I haven’t tried EMET so it would be really tough for me to say which one is better or both are doing the same thing.
Also, going into the deep to find the core mechanism of how such tools work is beyond our testing levels. We can’t even say that this one or that one is the best tool that one should try. The only way to judge is the time when some ransomware attacks the PC and this tool succeeds in preventing the attack. Or the other way is to trust the reputation level or statements mentioned on the homepages of such tools. The embedded video shows the testing done by SBGuard team in their lab which can be considered that it can earn the trust of user. They have also added a part on its homepage about how it works. This is what I can say about the tool. May be you can find some more details and throw some light. It would be really appreciating.

Thanks for the article. For this specific type security, I currently am using EMET and Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware. It appears that SBGuard does the same thing as EMET. Is there anything it does that EMET doesn’t?

How is it on CPU and RAM usage?

I use Malwarebytes, mostly because of its reputation and the fact that it was one of the first, if not THE first, major antimalware publishers to offer a dedicated anti-ransomware solution. I still have not figured out exactly how it does whatever it does. Do you know?

I have not used Kaspersky’s anti-ransomware product but like the fact that, together with the EU authorities and Interpol (I think) they have set up an organization and website to combat this threat. If you have tried it, what is your opinion on its usefulness and effectiveness?

Bitdefender, despite its antivirus reputation, offers a truly lousy anti-ransomeware solution: It is nothing more than a glorified sandbox to which you have to MANUALLY add individual files and folders to protect… ONE - AT - A - TIME 😦

Thanks again for introducing SBGuard. I will take a careful look at it.
