How many times have you felt the need to move an inactive window (one that is in the background) around the desktop without changing its present status i.e., without making it active by clicking on it. Windows does not permit this by default. But did you know that this is easily possible by running a script and using a keyboard mouse combination?
The script is basically an AutoHotkey Script that you must download. Install the AutoHotkey application for the script to run and do the needful.
AutoHotkey is a free, open-source scripting language for Windows that you can use to easily create small to complex scripts to automate numerous types of desktop tasks. It is also used to define customized hotkeys for keyboard and mouse, remap certain keys and more.
This scenario may be very useful if you want to rearrange all the open windows on your desktop without altering their status.
How it Works:
1. Download and install AutoHotkey using the link that we have provided at the end of this article.
2. Next, you must download the script to your local system and save it as an AutoHotkey script file. Click here to navigate to the GitHub link. Copy the script from the GitHub page, paste it in any editor like Notepad and save the file in your local disk. Make sure to use the filename extension of .ahk.
3. Finally, run the script as an Administrator and test the results as instructed in the next point
4. Hover your mouse over any part of the inactive window that you want to move. Keep the Alt key on your keyboard pressed, hold down the left mouse button and drag your mouse. Voila. The inactive window starts moving wherever you wish.
5. Once you have moved it to the desired location, just release the left mouse button and the particular window stays there.
6. During this activity the status of any of the windows does not change. This simply means that the active window stays active while the inactive ones remain as they are.
Final Words:
I tested the script, and found that it runs perfectly fine without any issues. I could easily move and rearrange any of the inactive windows on my desktop using the method described above without changing their status.
